HATCH/How did Kid & Coe come about? What personal experiences led you to realizing that there was a gap in rental units and kid-friendliness for families?
ZOIE/We were on tour in Sydney and had checked into a major five star hotel, planning to stay there for a few weeks. But within two days we determined it wasn’t going to work for us, we just needed more room as a family. When I started the process of looking for an apartment to rent, it took days. Most were unsuitable for a young child. I had to go and personally check them all out. When we found somewhere that did work, I then had to find a baby equipment rental firm to kit us out with high chairs, stair gates and the rest. It took a whole week out of our trip just getting to that point. But then everything opened up. As soon as we were situated, it felt that all of Sydney was open to us: we had a base to find local fresh grocers, nearby playgrounds, farmers markets, and cafés. That’s how it started. Our personal experience as a family made me realize that there was a need for a company offering stylish, family friendly accommodations around the world. Spending too much time going through uninspiring websites looking at uninspiring houses that claimed they were family friendly made me realize there was a real lack in the market for people who need the space of a home the most.
HATCH/Anything big on the horizon for Kid & Coe?
ZOIE/I want to continue to source properties to inspire families (myself included) to think outside the box when it comes to family travel. Our team is thinking about how we can expand our offering. We have a home swap service, Kid & Coe Exchange, in development, and we are looking at offering more content on things to do and see with your family anything that makes travel planning for families easier and fits within our aesthetic and vision and brand promise.
HATCH/If you could give any mama that has a business plan advice, what would it be?
ZOIE/I have found starting your own company has positives and negatives like most things in life. I have to remind myself to stay focused and mindful when I’m with my kids like trying not to think about the newest product feature whilst reading bedtime stories! Like most parents, I attempt to limit time spent on the phone around them, and try not to multitask. I’ve learned to be much more focused and efficient at work, so that I get more done in less time. But being your own boss and able to make the events that you want to having control over your own schedule, that is priceless and a massive motivator in owning your own business.
HATCH/Best moment so far for Kid & Coe?
We are really excited to start testing out different accommodation options, like our new home exchange concept, along with offering handpicked hotels. We are honored to continue to be asked to collab with awesome companies (such as Hatch!), and are committed to working with and highlighting inspiring families from within our community. From a personal standpoint, I am really proud of the way our team’s culture has grown into one that embraces flexibility, working remote, and travelling to visit our properties… all whilst kids in tow! As a mother, it feels good to be building a company that is shaped around working parents.
